About Italia Trulli

The Italia Trulli property which was acquired by the De Francesca family in 1980 consisting of 11,000 square meters of land, a dilapidated two-domed trullo, and a lamia with a fireplace—is an 18th century property consisting of six individual detached units amidst the tranquil Apulian countryside.

History & Culture

Puglia (also known as Apulia)

Puglia’s history is littered with conquerors and colonizers since the 11th Century BC and each of them have left their mark.  Puglia has been invaded by the Greeks, the Romans,  the Byzantines, the Saracens, and the Normans.  Most invaders left a mark, but the most prominent figure in Puglia’s history who built most of the castles that define the region is none other than Frederick II of Svevia.  The style fusing Byzantine, Sarasenic, and Italian decorative techniques with the French-Norman forms first appeared in the church of San Nicola in Bari in 1087.

A big part of the charm of Puglia is its slow approach to everyday life, fairytale landscape, the production of extra virgin olive oil, and its strong wine—the Primitivo. The region is predominantly rich in agriculture from ancient olive groves to wine and fruit groves.

Every summer, each village celebrates its own sagra di paese festival, where you can enjoy traditional food while listening to their traditional music and dance called pizzzica or tarantella.
